It’s the Little Things

My Google Apps for Domains account finally has GMail themes! I love my GMail account (especially through GAD), but I was tired of seeing the plain old email interface. My main GMail account has had themes for quite some time now and I got used to them, so having it on my GAD accounts seals the deal.

Ubuntu Working Well on Laptop

My “old” laptop feels new again.  Ubuntu has given it new life.  I’ve been trying my best to use it for anything that I don’t explicitly need Windows for and the list is growing.  I’m using it right now making my posts while I’m listening to music from my library.

I got Banshee working for library management and I mounted the server locally using smbmount so that I could access the music and pictures as if they existed directly on the laptop.  That seems to be the ticket.  I got Picasa up and running managing the pictures right from the mount point and banshee was able to import my music library and that is all working well.

I tried plugging my iPod Shuffle in and it showed up on my desktop, however, for some unknown reason, it’s not appearing in Banshee.  I’ll have to look at this because it would be nice to be able to manage the iPods from this laptop as well.  For the time being, it’s no big deal as I’m able to work with the iPods from my primary laptop which is running Windows Vista.

Linux on Children’s Computer

I got fed up with having to constantly “fix” the kids computer in their room.  They were constantly installing software, toolbars and other “helper” applications that were causing the computer to not run well.  Plus the updates were non-stop — especially since were weren’t allowing them on the Internet during the week… all updates were being done when they finally connected to the Internet on the weekend.

With Ubuntu installed, they can still run all of their online games (Runescape and Andkon) as well as some Linux games that will keep them relatively entertained.  They can do any type of wordprocessing that they need using OpenOffice.  They can connect to the music library using Rythmbox and DAAP and they can view any videos that then need.

The boot-up time is under a minute (compared to over 5 minutes with XP) and everything is working well.  The only limitation is currently the system will not hibernate or suspend well, since the boot-up time is so short, it shouldn’t be an issue.

Converting to Linux

Well, not completely, but as much as possible, I am converting to Ubuntu Linux.  I’ve switched a server at work, a workstation at work, a laptop at home and next is the kids’ computer in their room.  I have just become tired of the slowness and all the additional crud installed on Windows boxes.  Especially those boxes that are ust used for browsing and basic word processing.

The laptop I’m posting this from is now running Ubuntu.  It’s an older laptop that just wasn’t running Vista well, it was slow and problematic.  Now, with Ubuntu, it’s running quickly and doing everything that I need a laptop to do.  I still have the laptop that handles the finances (both home and Little League) and that will need to be Windows based for some time, but for this laptop, it made sense.

I can connect to my music library and listen on demand (using DAAP) with no issues and I can browse, email, word process and develop as desired… it’s essentially my play laptop — all quickly with no issues.  I’ve been amazed at how easy this has been.  I’ve even connected my cameras (both still and video) with no issues… it even transfers files quicker on this platform.

I’m a little concerned about the kids computer since it is even older and it connects to our wireless via a wireless USB adapter.  I guess I’ll know by the end of the day today.

Music Library Finally Complete

After much work, I’ve finally completed the digitizing of my music library.  I had much more of this completed in the past; however, a bad external hard drive ruined quite a bit of my collection.  So I’ve spent considerable time making sure my complete collection was digitized and available.  Here are the basic stats:

You can ignore the played statistics.  This report was generated through Media Monkey and it doesn’t include my statistics from playing on my iPod.  There is probably a way to do this; however, I don’t have the time or desire to try to figure this out right now.

Is ZenPhoto The Right Choice?

We are using ZenPhoto for our photo library and I’m beginning to wonder if it’s the best choice.  I really like the option of being able to upload via FTP and the pictures/albums are automatically added to the database.  That is a really nice feature for managing large albums and libraries.  The only real issue that I’m having is with the sorting and general navigation of the site.

With the technical issues that we were having, I had to recreate the ZenPhoto installation for our personal photos.  Our new installation is located on a subdomain and that seems to be working fine.  I tried to have the albums sorted manually to ensure that the newest pictures were shown first.  That was fine when there were only two years worth of albums; however, once I got all of the albums uploaded, this was impossible to do through the drag-and-drop admin interface on the backend.

With this number of albums, the page normally stops loading due to timeouts, so we are never able to display all of the albums, let alone organize them through drag-and-drop.  So, what I then did was have it sorted by album name (in descending order) – so as long as I keep the album names as they are (Year_Month), all sorts will be fine and the newest albums will be displayed first.

The only problem with that is that it looks rather clunky.  I could keep the initial portion of the album name that and change the label following it, or I can just update the descriptions to be more precise.

Overall, I have not had any problems with this installation displaying any of the pictures and working with any of our Flash Video out of the box.  This is probably the biggest plus to the software in that we haven’t had to do anything unusual to get everything to display out of the box.

The one option I would love is to be able to rotate the pictures up on the site.  Kathy has a habit of taking pictures with the camera at different angles.  Up to this point, I have had to ensure that the picture was rotated prior to uploading.  Again, this isn’t a big deal, but it would be nice if I could just upload them all and take care of that on the server when I’m adding my labels and text.

Another step that I have to perform is making the pictures smaller prior to uploading.  I’m using ImgaRes software to batch-reduce the pictures and make them manageable prior to uploading.  This ensures that the server doesn’t get over-burdened of trying to thumbnail all of these huge pictures.

Here is my current process:

  • We save all of our pictures to monthly folders on any machine in the house.
  • At the end of each month, I synch (contributory synch) each photo directory with the server.
  • I convert all camera video from AVI to FLV using the Flash encoder and place the Flash video in the “To Upload” folder.
  • I convert all monthly pictures using ImgaRes to 25% and have them stored in the “To Upload” folder tree.
  • I upload all converted video and images to the ZenPhoto albums folder via FTP.
  • After an hour or so, I log into ZenPhoto to add text and labels to the images.

It would be really nice if many of these steps were automated by software (as they probably could be).  I think Picasa does something like this with PicasaWeb (although not the video part).  That would be something that I could look to developing for myself.  Even if it were just scripted, that would be helpful.

I guess ZenPhoto is the right choice, since it seems to work and I’m not willing to commit the time to try to find an alternative.
